4 logo trends for 2022

Written by Zoë Barber Zoë Barber

When tasked with a new branding project here at The Pod, the part I love the most is designing the logo. A lot of thought and research goes into creating a great logo - just watch one of the branding tasks on The Apprentice to see what I mean!

That’s why I’m always on the look out for new trends and ideas. I’m often inspired by Logo Lounge and have many of their books, and I’m forever taking photos of designs that I love when I’m out and about. It may be a shop display with creative typography, a logo on a shopping bag, or simply graffiti art that adorns the walls of a café.

I will hunt also down typefaces I love, just so that I can use them in my next logo creation!

When you do this for long enough, you notice certain trends, typefaces and design elements appearing and disappearing in logos as trends come and go. And while we' don’t follow every trend, it’s important to keep an eye on what’s emerging.

With this in mind, let’s talk about the logo trends we’re seeing in 2022. The general feel is that there is a return to the past, with logos combining old and new trends, like the hand-drawn grunge style we saw in the 90s, mixed with rough edge styling.

There’s also an interesting focus on blurring, stretching and hand-drawn logos, along with more hard edge styles, combining white space with imagery.

Blur it!

As long as we can read it, then happy days! I can see this style working well being animated. Experimenting with depth and focus looks exciting.

Draw it!

I’m no Picasso, but I love to doodle and scribble! Unfinished style logos are appearing that have a child-like, rough edge quality.

Stretch it!

As I was once a member of the Society of Typographic Designers (STD) nothing excites me more than a good piece of typography. Elongated letters and experimenting with stretched type is on-trend. Type is a critical element to any brand - it’s all about creating visual interest.

Mix it!

Mixing imagery and typography is also becoming very popular, and it can create some really dramatic effects. I’m sure many designers will agree - some of the best logos come out of experimenting. It may be accidentally layering an image or a shape over some copy and thinking ooh, I like that! The results often inspire you to develop that idea further.

As long as you can read it, it doesn’t look too child-like and stretched to oblivion, then I think us designers should be OK!

Challenge us to be creative

Like I said, there’s nothing that we love more than getting stuck into a brand refresh - so whether you need an updated logo or a completely new look and feel, email us at hello@themarketingpod.co.uk today.
